Internet And It’s Types

The evolution of internet has taken place over many years. In 1969, the Department of Defense (DoD) of the United States of America started a network called ARPAnet. It began with one computer in California and three in Utah. Later, to share the software and hardware resources, the military allowed universities to join the network, from where the students caught up with it and developed much of the software, giving birth to the very popular internet.

The internet is becoming an integral part of our everyday lives. Today’s Internet is a constantly evolving tool, that not only contains an amazing variety of information, but also provides new ways of accessing, interacting and connecting with people and content. The internet is the largest computer network in the world, connecting millions of computer. It spreads across the globe and consists of countless networks and computers, allowing millions of people to share the information. It is a combination of several media technologies and an electronic version of newspapers, magazines, books, catalogs, bulletin boards, and much more. It can be called mother of all networks.

Uses Of Internet
Today the internet has become a part of our everyday life. There are millions of applications of internet. Some of the things that can be done on the internet are:

  1. To access a wealth of information, news, search and educational materials.
  2. To conduct business or complete banking and investing transactions.
  3. To access sources of entertainment and leisure such as online games, magazines and vacation planning guides.
  4. To shop for goods and services.
  5. To meet and converse with people around the world in discussion groups or chat rooms.
  6. To access other computers and exchange files.
  7. To send messages to or receive messages from other connected users.
  8. To provide information, photographs, audio and video.
  9. To take a course or access other educational materials.

Types Of Internet Connections

There are a few different types of Internet connections that are used by people around the world. A person may choose to use the type of Internet connection that best fits his needs. In order to determine which Internet connection is the best  for a person, one must understand the different types of connections.

  1. Dial-Up
Dial-Up Internet is becoming less common, however, there are still many people who use this type of connections and it suits their needs. A dial-up connection is provided by a dial-up Internet company. A person must connect the phone line to the computer and the computer will then use the phone line to call an Internet connection that will then put one’s computer on-line. A dial up Internet connection does take up the phone line that a person has connected to the computer and makes one unable to make or receive calls while using the internet.
  2. Broadband Internet Connection
Broadband is a high-speed Internet connection that is provided through one’s cable or telephone company. This type of Internet is the fastest for sending and receiving data and provides the customer with a constant, fast internet connection. In areas where broadband is not yet offered, there is satellite Internet service, which is very similar to broadband access. This type of connection uses a modem that is similar to that used for wireless access.
  3. Wireless
Wireless communication is one of the biggest contributions to mankind. Wireless communication involves the transmission of information over a distance without help of wires, cables or any other forms of electrical conductors. The company will send the customer a modem, which picks up the internet signal and sends it to a person’s computer. If there are other computers in the home, a   router will be provided by the company. The router is connected to the modem and sends the internet connection to other devices in the home. Two most common ways to connect to Internet wireless are:  WiFi and WiMax

a. Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi refers to Wireless fidelity, which lets you connect to the internet without a direct line from your PC to the ISP.
b. WiMax
WiMax is a wireless digital communication system. It can provide broadband wireless access up to 30 miles for fixed stations.

Computer Networking Concepts

A computer networking is a group of computer systems and other computing hardware devices that are linked together through communication channels to facilitate communication and resource-sharing among a wide range of users. For example, a business might use a computer network connected via cables for wireless transmission in order to gain access to a common server or to share programs, files and other information. Computer network offers the following advantages. They are as follows:

a. Computer network facilitates communication via email, video conferencing, instant messaging, etc.
b. Computer network enables multiple users to share a single hardware device like  a printer or scanner.
c. Computer network enables file sharing across the network.
d. Computer network make information easier to access and maintain among network users.
e. Computer network allows for the sharing of software or operating programs on remote systems.
